Description
Please describe your class, including the number of students, males, females, the subject of the course, the academic level, etc.
This class has 21 8th grade students taking physical science at the middle school level. There are 8 girls and 13 boys. The class is heterogeneously mixed with a handful of high performing students, a handful of low performing students, and the majority at a middle level of performance. This class happens to have no students with IEPs that require resource help or the presence of a resource teacher in the classroom, but there is one student who is hearing impaired.

Reflections
1. Describe key trends that you discovered for this class?
I noticed that the "smart" kids tend to keep to themselves and the "bad" kids tend to keep to themselves.
2. Describe the needs, interests, and characteristics of your learners that surprised you.
I was surprised that no one in this class needed resource help since some of the kids could strongly benefit from it while students in my other periods have resource help but don't need it.
3. How will these characteristics affect the way you plan, teach, and manage this class?
I will now be able to differentiate my lessons properly and plan on repeating certain directions to those who might need more attention. I've also noticed that some of the kids who are "bad" are just seeking attention so if you ignore them, they stop since it isn't working.
Given the amount of information you collected in each student, I am surprised by the relative brevity of your description of the classroom trends. What specific characteristics/interests/needs did you uncover and how specifically is this information influencing your planning and teaching? - fogleman
